3 Ways To Prepare For Painting Your Car

In an effort to save money, many car owners are turning to do-it-yourself solutions for repairing and restoring their cars. Part of the DIY movement is painting your own car. If you are planning to paint your own car, here are some preparation tips to keep in mind to get the best results.

Remove the Rust

Rust can ruin a good paint job before it even starts to dry. The rust can lead to unsightly bubbles in the paint that are difficult to mask. It is because of this, you need to remove the rust before starting.

There are a couple of ways you can deal with the rust. If the rust is slight, you can use a rust conversion kit. The kits work by changing the rust to iron phosphate, which you can paint over. Once the area dries, you can safely apply paint and the appearance of the car is not impacted.

If you know how to weld, you have the option of removing the area which is rusted and replacing it with another sheet of metal. If you are faced with severe rust that has eaten through the surface of the metal, this is the best option.

Take Off the Trim

When painting your car, you have to be careful to tape all of the trim and other components that you do not want painted. Unfortunately, it can take additional time and effort to expertly avoid getting paint on those area, even with the tape secured.

An easy way to avoid painting the trim is to simply remove it. Make note of where each part came from as you remove it. Once the paint dries, you can replace the trim without fear of messing up the paint job.

Setup the Paint Area

Painting a car can be a messy affair. It can also be a dangerous one if you are not doing it in a well-ventilated area.

Your painting area should be well-ventilated and out of direct sunlight. The sunlight can lead to dry spots in your finished product. If possible, try to paint in an area that is not too dusty. You can even lay down a tarp over the ground to keep the dust down around the car.

There are many other preparatory steps you can take before painting your car. Review the directions with the auto paint kit and follow them as closely as possible to achieve a good paint job. For more information, contact a company like Space Age Auto Paint Store.
